The Italian Riviera

The Italian Riviera, which stretches from the border with France and down to Tuscany, is an exciting and diverse holiday destination. The coastline here is not characterised by the wide sandy beaches you find on the Adriatic but by beautiful countryside and less tourism. The beaches here are often a combination of small stones and sand, and narrower than beaches at the Adriatic or in Tuscany. The Riviera has long been considered to be a more refined destination than the Adriatic. This is true to a certain extent as here the resort towns are more attractive, the restaurants and cafés more expensive and the shops more exclusive. It is here on the Riviera you might rub shoulders with the rich and famous, not in Bibione or in Rimini. Of course, there are all kinds of modern tourist complexes here, which are not exactly beautiful, but there are less of them than in the eastern resorts

The area 'Cinque Terre' is a chapter on its own. This is a small green oasis of nature with picturesque small villages and highly restricted traffic. The fact that cars are banned in the majority of the area and that there are restrictive regulations for new building means that towns like Levanto retain their own special charm.
