The town's placement with the small lagoon makes the sea water temperature usually 4 to 5 degrees higher than the second place only a few miles away. So this is an excellent seaside resort even in spring and autumn.
The town has 2,500 inhabitants and is divided into two parts: the newer neighborhood on the waterfront and promenade and the old town on the hill. The town has a rich variety of bars and restaurants.
If you want an alternative to a rocky coast you will find fine beaches north of the town of Porto Badisco and Otranto, and or along the Ionian coast, for example, long white beaches of Pescoluse only 25 km from Castro. Among other nice excursion possibilities, we can mention the charming coastal towns of Leuca and Gallipoli.
