Paestum! The very name conjures up images of ancient greatness and there certainly are plenty of these here. Unlike Pompeii and Herculaneum, in this case we are talking about Greek greatness.
The three temples that remains are: Neptune Temple from approx. 450 BC, Hera Temple of approx. 550 BC as the oldest and Athena Temple - often referred to as Ceres temple from around 500 BC. The temples are beautiful and well-preserved and the museum 'Museo Archeologico di Paestum' is definitely worth a visit for history buffs.
During the summer months, the temple ruins are home to a number of classical and modern concerts during the evenings.
Whilst it is not a big city, there is a good selection of very good restaurants in the town. In addition, there are sandy beaches located a little way out of town which are visited frequently by locals during the summer months. Here you can easily combine a visit rich in history and beach days.
