One half of this region is covered by the Apennines the other by plains. During the past 1500 years the area has undergone enormous geological changes with the marshland being transformed into plains and the sea withdrawing 10 km.
Ravenna is one of the big towns in the region and in its prime from about 400 to 550 AD it was a port. Today the town's many beautiful mosaics are the only remaining evidence of this fact. A great number of holiday homes are found along the long golden beaches.
Apart from the towns, the mountain region is the most interesting. The main town
Bologna is an old Roman town with many beautiful and cultural remains. It should also be mentioned that the towns of Imola and Maranello are located in this region. Imola is home to San Marino's F1 Grand Prix, and Maranello is the town where Ferraris are produced.
It is important to note that a whole range of recipes emanates from this province making it a vital part of Italian cuisine. The region is known for its good, solid and flavoursome local dishes.
