The island is just off the coast of Rome and you can reach it by ferry from Terracina and Formia.

Ponza and the other Pontian Islands are all volcanic in origin so the coastline is characterised by a dramatic contrast between sky-high cliff formations and wonderful beaches with fine white sand. The most famous beach is Chiaia di Luna but there are countless idyllic little coves and corners all around the coast.

On Ponza there are several residential quarters, or neighbourhoods, which are linked by rather narrow winding roads. Even the locals only dare drive in small cars, which mostly have impressive scratches down the sides! We recommend leaving your car behind when you visit the island and walking or cycling to get around. You can also rent mopeds.

The island’s specialities are based on fish. Restaurants and eateries are all over the place but there are very few shops outside the harbour area (Il Porto). There is a diving centre in Santa Maria and in Le Forna. You need a medical certificate and two passport photos to sign up for PADI diving courses. You can also hire boats or go on a boat trip to the islands of Zannone and Palmarola.
