On the coast between Albenga and Loano is the old harbour town of Ceriale. Ceriale has been under both Roman and Genoan rule at different times in its history and was once even invaded by Algerian pirates.

Notable sights include the fortress from 1564, which was built to defend the city from attacking bands of robbers and pirates. Despite the town’s often serious financial difficulties, the decision was made to build the impressive parish church of Sant Giovanni Battista e Eugenio.
