The area's history stretches back to the Bronze Age in 1500 - 1300 BC - While the town's history starts with the Lombards in around 800 AD. The town's defences Castello Scagliero and Ponte Visconteo dates from the 13th and 14th Centuries, and dominates the cityscape in a very significant way.
In the centre one can find the church of San Pietro in Cattedra, the beautiful mid 1700's Palazzo Guarienti and the great castle Castello Scagliero.
