Bolgheri is a small old romantic town in the hills south of Livorno, 2 km from the sea. The closest train station is on the outskirts of the town but there are many departures to the nearby town of Cecina. If you prefer to get here by aeroplane then the airport at Pisa is not far away.

The name Bolgheri has a beautiful sound in the ears of many wine lovers as some of best Italian wines come from these hills towards the sea, i.e. Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Grattomacco, Paleo, Masseto, Messorio, Scrio and Guado al Tasso.

If you want a real wine experience you should try a bottle from here. Sassicaia is probably the most famous and Messorio the most expensive. Regarding price, Paleo, Grattamacco and Guado al Tasso are more affordable (but still horribly expensive). Of the more recent vintages keep an eye out for the excellent 1997 to 1999 (although 2001 from Masseto should be near to perfection). Look out for price differences in the shops too, as prices can vary enormously from shop to shop.
