It’s almost 500 years since the French philosopher Montaigne proclaimed the creamery in Laterina to be the best in  Italy.

The establishment in question does not exist anymore, and although you can eat well in the town, few of today’s gourmets would award the town the same honour.

But Laterina is still worth a visit because it is a charming town, which is also ideally located for outings to the rest of Tuscany (and Umbria and Lazio for that matter).

The main A1 motorway, which connects Milan and Rome, is just a few kilometres out of town, so even though Florence is 65 km away, the drive only takes about 45 minutes. If you want to visit Arezzo instead, where there are fewer tourists, it’s only 20 km.
