It does not take many minutes to see Serravalle Pistoiese’s entire historic centre, in fact you can walk it from end to end in two minutes flat!
And yet the town has a long and exciting history due to its important strategic location. “Serra valle” means “the constricted valley”, which is very fitting as the town is built where the valley narrows. For centuries, all travelers and armies into the valley had to pass under the walls of the stronghold, the ruins of which are still standing high at one end of the town. In fact, the town has two fortifications, one towards the west and one towards the east.
The town also has some other exciting buildings, but not much else to see. If you want to go on an excursion,
Florence is 40 km away and
Pisa 58 km.
