Holiday in Umbertide

Umbertide’s rich history goes back to the time before Christ. However, it wasn’t until the 12th century that the town began to look like it does today in the small historic town centre. In the second half of the 14th century, the town gained its own statutes and from 1374 to 1390 the great castle was built. Today the castle still dominates the town with its massive 40 metre high central tower and three magnificent round corner towers.

Today the castle often plays host to modern art exhibitions making an exciting contrast between the ancient and modern.

The town is also home to a number of churches that contain some impressive works of art: for example, the 16th century Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà with its impressive frescos by the master painter Pinturicchio, or the 17th century Santa Croce where the renowned painter Luca Signorelli’s painting of Christ’s removal from the cross adorns the main altar.

Umbertide also has a thriving pottery scene if you’re looking for some souvenirs to take home. Or you can buy some of the excellent local produce and delicacies, or just make do with eating them in one of the town’s restaurants.
