The south Tirolo region is divided up into 2 provinces: Trentino and Alto Adige. The region enjoys extensive autonomy, which sets it apart from the other Italian regions. Alto Adige was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before it became a part of Italy following the First World War
The region is situated in the north of the Italian Alps with "La Vetta d'Italia" as the most northern point in the Republic. It is a very mountainous area with over 600 lakes, the majority situated at a height of 1800 metres. Because of its high location, South Tirolo offers many ski areas and wonderful scenery and outdoor activities. There are many palaces and both the beautiful cathedrals in Trent and Bolanza in Roman and Gothic style respectively are worth a visit. Building work was begun on both in the 14th century. The region's cuisine is mainly Prussian inspired.
