
 Aquileia is a small town rich in Roman remains. The town held an important strategic and commercial position during the Roman Empire. At that time more than 200,000 people lived in Aquileia, today there are about 3,500. The Basilica is one of the main attractions of the town together with the remains of the Forum with some remaining columns and the Roman Mausoleum.
Udine is first mentioned in 983 AD when the German King and Holy Roman Emperor Otto II gave several castles to the patriarch of Aquileia. Udine is a very historic town and the churches of Chiesa della Puritá, Chiesa di San Francesco and the castle Castello di Udine are among the most important sights in town.
Gorizia in the southern part of Friuli borders Slovenia and has about 35,000 inhabitants. Castello di Gorizia is the most important monument but the cathedral and some of the other churches in the town are also worth a visit.
Pordenone with its Castello di Torre, cathedral, grand houses for the nobility and various churches should also be on the ‘must see' list.
Trieste is the biggest town in Friuli with approx. 220,000 inhabitants. It has many museums housing ancient and modern art as well as palaces, Roman monuments, beautiful castles, the cathedral and basilica.
