It is often far too easy to destroy beautiful old towns and houses when the entire world's attention is directed towards your town. This has happened time and again in Italy and elsewhere. Few people have a strong enough sense of responsibility to prevent them trying to profit as much as possible from tourism, no matter what the cost to the environment. A rare example of ethics and vision is found in the small family business Trullidea.


A few years ago Antonietta and Dino started to restore old trullis (the cone shaped traditional houses) so they could receive guests, but without pandering to tourist demands for luxury and comfort.

Here we are not dealing with new "pseudo trullis", or imitations of  the solid craftsmanship of the past, which are often found. This is the genuine article. And as we are dealing with houses, which are often hundreds of years old, there is no standardisation. Each house is different! Some are in the centre of town, some a little way out in the country (but still within walking distance of town), some have one room and some have all of three. The one thing they have in common, apart from the wonderful rustic interior design, is their dome shape and the conical roof. The houses are just as simple as they have always been, but furnished in the best possible taste.


It is possible to use some of the houses on a hotel basis. In this case you can choose half or full board, which is enjoyed in the restaurant L'Aratro.  Here Apulian cuisine is interpreted in a new and exciting way. From the large restaurant terrace there are unforgettable views over Alberobello's many conical roofs. Please note that there are no kitchen facilities in the houses used as hotel bedrooms.
