San Marco is both a charming and a fascinating town. It’s about 600 meters above sea level and on a good day you can see the beautiful Aeolian Islands on the horizon.

San Marco is famous throughout Italy for its fantastic red marble. The warm red rocks found in the area have been used throughout the ages to build churches and monuments even in the Greek and Byzantine periods. The town has a long and interesting history, and today has a fine collection of Byzantine art, and coins from both its Norman period and from the time of the German King and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II.

San Marco’s charm lies mainly in its fascinating network of streets on different levels and its beautiful buildings. Here you’ll also find many specialty stores including "La Tela di Penelope" where you’ll find examples of high-quality weaving.

On the main street you’ll find a wonderful little enoteca, with a great selection of quality Sicilian wines, honey, delicious marmalades, freshly cut ham and Nero di Nebrodi (the black pig from the Nebrodi mountains) sausages, plus lots of wonderful cheeses. We also recommend that you eat at La Macina, a local restaurant that offers lots of interesting Sicilian specialties from the area.
