Albenga has been wrongly accused of being a boring modern town. Nothing could be further from the truth! Of course, no town is particularly exciting if you only spend time in its suburbs, industrial areas or outskirts. This is also the case with Albenga, but once you enter the historical centre you encounter one of Liguria´s prettiest and most fascinating towns.

It is very rare to find towns in Liguria with such large well-preserved medieval centres. Most towns are either relatively small or development has overtaken the old buildings. However, the centre of Albenga within its well-preserved town walls provides a splendid exception.

It is quite apparent that Albenga is a town with a long history. It dates back to the 6th century BC and at times was very powerful. The 12th and 13th centuries were especially glorious times for Albenga, and many churches, towers and palaces in the town centre were built during this period.

The historic centre provides its own physical parameters for many short walks. Highlights such as the cathedral, Cattedrale di San Michele, the palace Torre del Panciotta and the bishop’s palace with adjoining museum make Albenga just as cultural an experience as most towns in Tuscany.

And on top of that there are plenty of tempting restaurants, inviting cafés and good shops where you can spend time reflecting on what you have seen afterwards!
