It’s not because Ponza is particularly big, but at 8 km long, it is by far the biggest island in the Pontian group, which lies off the coast of Lazio, south of Rome. You can get to the island by ferry or hovercraft from Rome and Naples and most of the larger ports in-between these two cities. The islands have a marvellous, varied landscape. There are remote stretches of coastline with steep cliff faces, gradually replaced by sandy sheltered coves, which then turn rocky, as well as areas with fertile and dense vegetation. These islands are well worth experiencing!

Ponza’s centre is called Porto di Ponza, and is the harbour. The natural horseshoe-shaped port has been home to a tiny fishing community for hundreds of years, and today it keeps company with the growing numbers of tourists, but still retains its romantic charm and beauty. You can find small winding streets, charming squares and a large selection of shops, cafés and restaurants.
In the middle of the island, is the area known as Le Forna, where it’s much more peaceful than down at the harbour. Here you are in the midst of the wonderful countryside.

It is unnecessary, some might say foolish, to take your car to Ponza. There are no significant distances to cover and busses run between all the places of interest on the island. You can also hire bikes, mopeds and boats.
From Porto di Ponza you can also take a trip to the other islands and islets, and enjoy and meal and a dip in the sea on the way. We can warmly recommend Ponza to anyone who likes diving, because the water is crystal clear and gets deep fast.
