Aosta is situated between Europe´s highest mountains and is the main town in the province of Aosta. Archaeological finds show that it has been inhabited since 2900 BC. The place was strategically important and virtually all rulers throughout the ages have taken a turn at controlling the area. Interestingly, Aosta has always enjoyed a large degree of independence – and still does; the province has been autonomous since 1948.
The town was founded during the Roman Empire and you can still see visual and monumental historical evidence such as the amphitheatre, the old town walls and the town church.
The centre offers good shopping with several clothes boutiques, delicatessen shops and workshops with local craftsmen. After closing time (19:00) the rest of the evening can be spent at the local cafes. There are a number of really good restaurants in the main street.
