Forio is the largest town on the island of Ischia, which lies in the sea off the Neapolitan coast. The Saracens attacked the island on many occasions and eventually managed to capture it. They have left their mark not only on the island’s architecture, but also on its population, many of whom have Saracen ancestry.

In the 1950s, the town became a hub for painters and poets from all over the world. There are now charming narrow streets with local painters’ ateliers and pottery workshops. The ancient mansion houses of the nobility are also well preserved and there are several impressive churches. All of this makes the historic centre fascinating. Should you get hungry on your travels, there are also plenty of wonderful restaurants to choose from.
