The town dates back to the middle of the 19th century and was originally established in order to stop the smuggling between Sardinia and Corsica. Santa Teresa is a well-known resort and has been a popular tourist destination since the 1960s.

By Santa Teresa, at the end of a long peninsular, you find the headland Capo Testa and the beaches Santa Reparata and Rena di Ponente. At the end of the headland there are some very striking granite rocks, and a little towards the east is the fairytale valley, Valle della Luna, a fantastic landscape with beautiful granite rocks of majestic proportions.

Regular ferries run from Santa Teresa to the quaint, expensive and very French Bonifacio on Corsica.
