Taormina is situated on the picturesque mountain slopes of Sicily’s east coast. From the town, you have spectacular views across the Messina Straits as well as of the mighty volcano Etna.

Taormina is renowned for its Greek theatre, which is the scene for both theatrical and musical performances during the summer months. Its centre is a winding network of small, atmospheric streets, flower-filled balconies and alluring restaurants and cafés. Much of its charm is in its location and the fantastic original buildings that adorn the city centre.

The town is at its best in the spring or autumn when temperatures are comfortable. Temperatures aside, many of the town’s events take place during the summer months. However, should temperatures rise, you’re never too far away from the sea here.

Taormina is without doubt a beautiful town, and if you’re looking for international atmosphere and a high standard of service, this is the holiday destination for you. There are, however, an awful lot of shops selling souvenirs and brand name clothes. And summer in Taormina brings a multitude of tourists from near and far, making it a bit of a squeeze at times.

If you’re planning on staying in one of the hotels along the coast, be aware that the railway tracks are very close in places.

Isola Bella

The Greek theatre: The most significant monument in Taormina is the ancient theatre, not just because of its artistic and historical values but also because of its unique position. The view from here is called panoramaet par excellence and is definitely worth experiencing when you come to Sicily. The second largest ancient theatre on the island (109 metres in diameter) after the theatre in Syracuse, was built during Hellenic times in the 3rd to 2nd centuries BC. It was rebuilt and extended 300 years later and used by the Romans for competitions and gladiator fighting.

The theatre has good acoustics and today is used in the summer for theatre performances and concerts. Another important Roman building worth seeing is an Odeon, behind the Saint Cataldo church, which was originally used for musical recitations.

Near Taormina we also arrange stays in:
Giardini di Naxos
