The town of Piobbico lies in a fertile valley between Mount Nerone and Mount Mondiego.
The town’s history centres round the Brancaleoni castle, which was built in the 14th century. Astute tourists will be able to spot interesting details on every corner, for example, the clock that turns the wrong way, ’the gate of the dead’, the Guado mill and architectonic details in travertine marble. You can visit the castle with a local guide who will show you round the many gardens and rooms with medieval frescos, stucco, coats of arms and stone fireplaces.
There is a town festival every year on the second Sunday in September, when the locals meet in the streets to eat the town’s speciality, Polentone alla carbonara, and then party all night long.
There is also a very special society in the town. Residents have formed a society called the ‘ugly club’ and there is an annual presidential election where naturally the ugliest of all is voted in!
