Scafa Alta is on the road between Borgo San Gregorio by the beach and the old town of Naso in the Nebrodi mountains. No matter where you are in Scafa, the views over the sea and the Aeolian islands are stupendous. The village is approx. 300 m above sea level, which means that temperatures are much lower than at the beach.
Scafa is not really a town. It only has a small shop and a place to eat (da Zac) in the highest part of town. Shopping takes place either in Naso or in Capo d’Orlando (both approx. 5 km away). The place is especially recommended for travellers who want both spectacular landscape and peace and quiet. A car is necessary to get around and fully enjoy the area.
We recommend the following excursions from Scafa:
- Cefalú, where the old fortress and the Norman cathedral form the town’s profile and atmosphere
- The Aeolian islands
- Tindari and the Greek theatre
- Naso, only 10 km from the coast
- The Nebrodi mountains: The Nebrodi mountains have fabulous scenery with green pastures, shepherds’ cottages and ancient paths. Here are old villages once inhabited by Sicilian aristocratic families. The districts in the region are today a designated Nature Reserve. Along old paths and small tracks you can enjoy wonderful views over the sea and Mount Etna.
- Palermo, Etna and Messina. If you do a longer drive you can go to Taormina or the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento.
