Some people think that the special name of the town derives from the Latin ”suavus locus ille”, in other words “yonder pleasant place” but you have to look very closely to find signs of Roman influence in the town. The Middle Ages are far more obvious.
Don’t expect to meet many tourists in Sovicille. For most people it is in the wrong direction when coming out of Siena. Normally you would drive up to Chianti, or down to Montalcino and Pienza or over to Arezzo and Cortona, but not normally west. But it is no bad idea to explore this area a bit more because the towns are uncommercialised and the scenery magnificent.
Sovicille lies at the foot of the long mountain range “La Montagnola Senese” which has landscape that cannot but encourage you to either explore by car or by foot. In Sovicille there are several restaurants, ranging in style from the definite rustic to the extremely elegant.
