Ostuni is also known as ’the white town’, and when you arrive here, you will immediately understand why. All the houses in the ancient town are white washed, and their flat roofs and colourful shutters are more reminiscent of Greece than Italy. The town lies on three mounds and the highest one has a fascinating medieval centre.

The remains of the Aragon wall are still visible around Ostuni. When you leave the town heading for Bari, there is the option of taking the beautiful strada panoramica along the town wall, but despite the town’s medieval origin and appearance, there are no spectacular buildings from this period. The cathedral was completed in 1470-95. Its facade has a late-Gothic aspect with lots of rose windows and bas-relief, but its interior is more characterised by Baroque alterations.

If you are interested in museums, at 15 Via Cattedrale, there is a pre-Roman era archaeological museum. The museum is open on Thursdays between 15:00 and 18:00.
