This little port town of 2,200 inhabitants is situated on a rocky slope about 10 km from Monterosso, and is considered to be the most architecturally impressive of the five villages in Le Cinque Terre. It’s easy to get around by train, which is the best means of transportation in these villages. Riomaggiore is also a paradise for walkers, and there are lots of different walks of various distances that you can start from here.

Particularly famous is the legendary stretch between Riomaggiore and the neighbouring village of Manarola. The path was laid in 1930 and is called ‘Via dell'Amore’, (Lovers’ Lane). It’s no coincidence that the walk along the cliff top affords an amazing view of the sea and is therefore a favoured walk for loved up couples and tourists from all over the world.

Other interesting sights include the parish church San Giovanni Battista from 1340, decorated with impressive marble reliefs, and the castle ‘Il Castello sul Colle del Cerricò’ from the 13th century, from where there is a breathtaking view of the sea and town. The town centre with its winding, stepped streets and 14th century architecture is a marvellous place to go exploring. The outer part of the town is more modern and dates from the second half of the 19th century.

Riomaggiore also offers a variety of culinary experiences, naturally influenced by the location. There are numerous fish dishes, and desserts with fresh and dried fruits, honey and pine nuts.
