Ostuni is also known as ’the white town’, and when you arrive here, you will immediately understand why. All the houses in the ancient town are white washed, and their flat roofs and colourful shutters are more reminiscent of Greece than Italy. The town lies on three mounds and the highest one has a fascinating medieval centre.
It’s not the town of Matera itself, which is interesting, but its old slum districts or "Sassi". There’s enough to keep you occupied here for a whole day.
