If you find yourself on the island of Salina, then you must take a hike up the mountains Monte Porri and Monte Fossa delle Felci. On Monte Fossa delle Felci, an old crater has become home to gigantic bracken (felci aquiline), which together with the rest of the rich vegetation on Salina, makes this a tropical paradise.
The island is not spoiled by tourism and has no large hotels that dominate the landscape in contrast to many other Mediterranean islands.
- Santa Marina is the island's largest port, where there is a small promenade with good restaurants and a place where you can rent a scooter to explore the island. There is no sandy beach here, but there are flat rocks where you can sunbathe and swim at the edge of the town.
- Lingua is a small fishing village with an interesting square and a vista out to the islands of Lipari, Panarea and Stromboli in the east. There is a small bar on the square by the stone beach where it's worth standing in line to sample the traditional 'pane cunzatoie' bread with toppings - portions are tasty and very large. Behind the small group of houses there is a lighthouse and a former marsh area which once produced salt.

- Malfa is located on the island's north side and has a small harbour and its village centre a little further up the hill. The roads here are steep and there is an exotic atmosphere with fishermen and farmers selling their wares in the streets or from their own living room! Here is where they grow the grapes and make the very special wine 'Malvasia delle Lipari'. In the city you will also find places to eat and scooter rental.
- Leni is located right between volcanoes and is the island's highest urban community. In Leni, you will find plentiful vineyards and from here you can journey up to the island's two mountain peaks on foot along pathways. Leni is not really a real town, rather a necessary passage between the two following cities, Rinella and Pollara, and the rest of the island.
- Rinella is a small village on the coast with a small harbour and a very good sandy beach. Here you can also rent a scooter. On clear days you can see enjoy views of Sicily's mainland with Etna in the background.
- Pollara is the island's most exotic part - it was here where they filmed the famous "postman" with Massimo Troisi just before he died. The town is very quiet with good distance between houses. It is practically in a huge crater where half of the land fell into the sea. There is picturesque pebble beach which can be reached via a pathway from the centre of town.
