Wellness Centre with swimming pool It sounds like a joke, but you really will find a wellness centre and a swimming pool in the middle of the protected caves of the Sassi district. Since it is indoors it is therefore open all year - it consists of cave pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna and a Turkish bath. The pool is anything but traditional and square - it measures approx. 12 m by 3 - 4 ½ metres and has an additional 7 metres around the corner. The depth is approx. 160 cm ... and it is a remarkable experience to swim here. We must point out that access is reserved for adults (over 18 years).
The hotel opened in 2003 and it has been awarded 3 stars. It has 28 bedrooms, an elevator, a bar, a conference room and a reading room. There is no restaurant but the hotel is located in the old town of Matera where you will find many good restaurants serving local cuisine. The rooms are housed in the old caves whose original shape and structure have been retained, and for this reason they maintain a cool climate even in the summer months. Many rooms have a terrace overlooking the Sassi di Matera. All rooms are stylishly furnished with beautiful old wooden furniture and some modern touches, with colourful tiled floors, private bathrooms, air conditioning, satellite TV and internet access.
Locanda di San Martino has a unique location in the middle of Matera's maze of winding paths. The elderly and disabled should be aware that Sassi di Matera is located in a ravine, and the hotel is built into a rock face, so there may be some steps and therefore issues with access.

Very fine and cosy rooms and a bit special to stay in "a cave". We also went to the pool under-ground and it was a fantastic experience.
Fully lived up to our expectations. Interesting hotel.
Really good breakfast in cozy surroundings, there was even a pianist.
Wonderful and different SPA. We only have positive things to say.
It was pretty difficult to find the hotel. In the driving instructions it said that you could drive to the hotel. Wasn't quite true, seen as there was some roadwork at the end of the street. Oh well. At the reception we were given an exemplary welcome. We could either borrow a wagon and drive our luggage to the hotel, or the hotel could arrange for someone to pick it up for us. The hotel also offered parking in a garage against pay. Worth every euro.
The room was fantastic with beautiful surroundings and good storage. The view looked like it was something out of a postcard, magical.
Very skilled, English speaking staff, who helped us find out what we would see, where we should eat, and what we should do. Super professional.
We booked ourselves into a spa, which was an experience - real and very unique.
Breakfast was, by Italian standards, the high of class in atmospheric rooms. To further better the mood, a pianist sat in the room and played, which really made the whole experiencer a lot better.
The town of Matera is worth a visit, we were there one day, during peak summer and it felt perfect.
