This small town is known for two reasons:
Its Greek ruins from the city of Metapontum. There are no remains of the city wall track - nor of the theater, which is said to have been here. Main remaining relic is a Doric temple where fifteen columns still stand upright and bear witness to a bygone era.

Lido di Metaponto, one kilometer long and beautiful sandy beach (this is the fine white sand), which in summer is quite popular.
