Montescaglioso is situated on the top of a hill (352 m above sea level) with a view across the Bradano Valley. The town is one of the oldest agricultural centres in Matera Province and is still self-sufficient from agricultural produce grown in the valley and all the way out to the sea.
The town has about 9,000 inhabitants, and the majority work in agriculture. Tourism is one of its newer industries, thanks to the proximity of Matera. But it never feels over-crowded, even in high season.
The oldest part of the town is built up around the Saint Angel Abbey. Here the buildings date back to between the 16th and 19th centuries, and were home to the local farmers and richer citizens.
From the neighbouring hill, San Biagio, you can enjoy a view over the beautiful scenery all the way to the Meditteranean and to the ancient town of Metaponto.
