Visit the charming Lake Garda towns

Garda town itself is the principal town on the south-eastern shore with a lovely promenade and plenty of restaurants, shops and a nice holiday atmosphere. Malcesine with its medieval castle, attractive piazza and cobbled streets is one of the most charming Lake Garda towns. From here you can take the cable car up the Monte Baldo for some impressive views! Riva del Garda is known as Lake Garda's northern treasure with its wide beaches and beautiful panoramas, and then there is Limone sul Garda, equally charming with a cute fishing village feel to it. The wine town of Bardolino nestles on the south-eastern shore with vineyards that stretch across to the neighbouring Valpolicella Wine District and is certainly worth discovering.

Excursions at Lake Garda

There is a wealth of opportunity for excursions from here, either up to the Dolomite Mountains, or to the smaller lakes of Tenno, Ledro and Iseo. You can find famous places of interest in Verona and Venice, but don’t forget the wonderful trip along River Mincio down to Mantova, where you can visit the beautiful flower garden, "Parco Sigurta" en route. To the north and west, the mountains rise vertically from the lake, and there is an impressive drive from Gardone up to Riva on winding roads and through tunnels.

Driving around Lake Garda

The roads around the lake are mostly winding, and there are tunnels on both sides of the northern end, as well as a number of galleries built to protect cars and passer-by from falling rocks and landslides, which previously used to cause frequent road closure. All of this makes driving both exciting and slow, so be aware that trips around the lake can take some time. On Sundays, tourists from Milan, Brescia, Verona, Trento and Bolzano flock to the area, and traffic jams are the norm.

Paradise for an active holiday

The lake has so much to offer in terms of activity and it is considered as one of the best places for hang-gliding, paragliding, windsurfing and sailing. You can rent a bike in Malcesine and be transported to the top of Monte Baldo and ride down, or just follow trails around the lake. The pleasant climate, fantastic countryside, the many historical places of interest and the hospitable people make Lake Garda an internationally famous holiday destination. Also consider a visit to Gardaland if you have young ones, or even for the adults to go crazy. This huge theme park with many rides and amusements can easily fill a day if not more of your holiday.

Cross the lake by boat
Another great option is to hop on the lake ferries (between March to early November) and cross the width or length of the lake stopping off at the major towns. You can even buy hop on - hop off day tickets allowing you unlimited trips during the day. That way you can see many lake towns without driving. See the timetables: Lake Ferries

Bicycle Rental
You can rent bikes in the town of Costermano del Garda for around 35 - 40 Euros. per bike incl. delivery. For more information see: Bike Store
