The battle of San Martino lasted for 14 hours and was said to be a bloodbath! Fortunately it is a much more peaceful place today.
San Martino della Battaglia is situated in beautiful surroundings just 4 kilometres south of Lake Garda, very close to the motorway exit for Sirmione. It makes the city an ideal starting point for excursions to Lake Garda, the Valpolicella wine area, the opera city of Verona, and also day trips to Venice and Mantova are within easy reach.
The city is located in the beautiful wine region called Colline Moreniche and so far, and some would say fortunately, is largely unknown among tourists. The area is full of small and interesting villages of which we would say that Valeggio sul Mincio, Volta Mantovana, Borghetto, Monzambano and Solferino to name a few are worth a visit. The area also has many excellent villages where you find the locals out enjoying a good meal and a bottle of wine, and this is always a good sign!
