The city has many historical memories of the famous townsmen which include Beniamino Gigli, who is one of the most respected tenors of his time. And probably more famous is the author - Giacomo Leopardi whose birthplace was here.
Marche contains no less than six national and regional parks, and this area is particularly rich in vineyards, rolling hills and splendid views. You will find that this is a wonderful area for hiking, and if you want a swim, the Adriatic is just 10 km down the hill. Here you will find Porto Recanati with its lovely beaches along the coast. From Recanati you can also easily visit the mini-state of San Marino about 146 km north or drive to Ancona (about 40 minutes by car). From here you can sail to Greece, Croatia, Turkey, etc.
Recanati is located in the province of Macerata and was founded in the year 1150 AD. It lies in a semicircle facing the valley and can be compared to a giant amphitheatre in the landscape. The town extends through a long street with the main square Piazza Leopardi in the middle. Here is the wide selection of restaurants serving local, traditional dishes from the Marche region. The townis home to several celebrities including the opera singer Beniamino Gilgi and the poet Giacomo Leopardi. It is for this reason that Recanati has been assigned the nickname of Poetry city.
The opera singer Beniamino Gigli was born in Recanati in 1890. He was one of the most respected tenor singers of his time and was recognized throughout the world for his beautiful voice. He started his singing career as a choirboy in Recanati Cathedral.
Giacomo Leopardi was born in Recanati year in 1798. Along with Dante Aligheri he is considered Italy's greatest poet and philosopher.
Another celebrity is the Italian Renaissance painter Lorenzo Lotto , who lived from year 1480 to year 1557. He lived for several years in Recanati and today you can see one of his most famous works – the painting Annunciation at the town museumVilla Colloredo Mels.
Transport The nearest airport is Ancona, located approx. 25km away. From the airport, it is recommended that you rent a car or take a taxi to the station in Ancona, where bus services run on to Recanati.
