Baveno was founded around year 1000 AD. Today the town is one of the biggest attractions at Lake Maggiore. Its fame dates back to the 19th century when the bourgeois made this area their holiday destination and built their impressive villas.
There are train stations in the city and with direct links to Milan, it is actually possible to visit Baveno without a car. There are also boat services to Stresa and the islands, Isola Madre, Superiore and Bella and the beautiful gardens of Villa Taranto. If you need more suggestions for excursions, there is a tourist office in the city centre in Piazza Dante Alighieri 14 (during October to March it is only open in the morning, and all day for the rest of the year with the usual siesta in the afternoon).
