In the valley at the foot of the impressive mountains are a number of charming villages with a rich history and distinctive culture such as Alagna, Gressoney, Issime, Rimella, Macugnaga and Formazza. Come here to experience the best in mountaineering and for the very fit, you can even reach the highest mountain hut in Europe - Punta Gnifetti at 4559 metres.
A lift from Alagna takes you to Salati pass, at 2980m, which in turn shortens the approach to the high peaks of Monte Rosa, and during winter offers great possibilities for skiing and free-riding. It is for this reason that the area of Alagna earned the nick name of “Free-ride Paradise”. The peaks offer slopes for all the levels including
Val Sermenza, Val Mastallone and Val Vogna to mention a few.

The word "Val" in Italian means valley and the 'Sesia' part comes from the river Sesia. The area covers desolate wilderness parts, residential areas with historic small towns with small lively squares, ski resorts and rapid rivers. The area is a paradise for adventurers in the summer months, with long hiking and biking trails in impressive surroundings, and great opportunities also for canoeing and rafting in the many rivers.
