The streets have a real medieval feel to them and the town is full of character. Originally the town was subject to Catalan rule, and today the locals still speak with a Catalan dialect and the culture in the town shows signs of its Iberian past.
A walk along the pretty medieval streets in the centre of Alghero takes you past the most important monument in Alghero; the church of San Francesco with its campanile - bell tower, cloister and little cloister garden. The walk also takes you past the cathedral Santa Maria with its impressive gothic bell tower. There is a very pretty path following the water around the centre of the town. It takes you past the remains of the medieval town wall and the view across the sea towards the North over the headland of Capo Caccia is magnificent.
