Francavilla di Sicilia is located in Alcantaradalen in the north-eastern part of Sicily north of Etna and only approx. 15 km from the Mediterranean coast and the famous Taormina. The city's origins date back to 1092, and today it is mainly visited by those who are interested experiencing nature and peace and quiet.
The town grew up around the monastery of San Salvatore di Placa and to this day there are still historical sites to visit. The main attraction is however, Gole di Alcantara - characteristic deep gorges through lava rocks where the river Alcantara runs and sometimes forms caves, ponds and waterfalls along its way. Today, the entire valley enjoys a status as a nature reserve, and much is being done to preserve this unique area.
