Galati Mamertino is located in the hills of the north-eastern coast of Sicily in the Nebrodi park.
It is worth visiting for a an excursion into the mountains for example on the way to the waterfall catafulco. The town is in itself an ordinary town with around 3000 inhabitants, and a small medieval centre.

The first reason to visit is to see the castle whose ruins lie on a vantage point in the high part of the town. If you come here at around 15.00 hours, the town is usually almost deserted and you can easily park in the main square. The few hundred metres to the castle takes you up and down the old town stairs. The view from the castle is wonderful and you can see all the way to the sea. Should you wonder what the small houses are that you can see from here on the outskirts of town, well it's the cemetery and its chapels: Yes, they resemble small terraced houses!
Once you've enjoyed the view and returned to the car, then it is time to sit in the square and enjoy a nice ice cream as there really is good ice cream here. The other attraction is the town's people who come to be together on the square who are usually friendly and entertaining.
