Vendicari is synonymous with beautiful scenery for many Sicilians, and since this nature reserve is not mentioned in most travel guides, it could be an even better reason to choose it for a holiday location. Since not many people therefore know about it, you will find plenty of space and peace and quiet to discover nature and enjoy the wonderful scenic surroundings without the usual crowds of tourists.

Small nature reserve ideal for bird watching

You should arrive by car if you wish to spend your holiday in this exotic corner of Sicily. On weekends, you will not be alone however, as the locals often come from the cities of Catania and Siracusa to enjoy nature also. You will find it quieter during the week when you can enjoy the company of the many bird species that inhabit the reserve, either throughout the year or when they migrate from northern Europe to Africa which is "only" 350 km away. The 1512 hectares of land that forms Oasi di Vendicari includes several lakes of salt water, called Pantani, which form an ideal environment for birds. There are also good beaches, including (from north to south) Eloro, Marianelli, Calamosche, which have received the blue flag Vendicari located at the old tuna factory and finally San Lorenzo.

Nearest "civilized" areas

There are traces of human presence dating back to the Greeks in the reserve but no real places or towns where you can stay. However, it is possible to eat both lunch and dinner at the small eateries or agriturismo. You will find the nearest shops in the fishing village Marzamemi whose old centre is a pure delight for the eyes - and you can eat or have a drink right out on the water.
