Mestre itself is nothing special, but it is a great base for a holiday in respect to its location near to Venice. You can find relatively cheap accommodation here, some good shops and a small selection of historic sights. The Venetians have established their industrial shopping malls in this area so this is where they come to do their main shopping. The journey to Venice from Mestre is only 10 minutes by train.
