Negrar is a small town of about 16,000 inhabitants in the beautiful and world famous wine region of Valpolicella north of Verona and east of Lake Garda. Here is a small selection of shops, a bakery, a few cafes and a bank.
Negrar is one of the seven municipalities in Valpolicella. The other is Pescantina, San Pietro in Cariano, Marano, Fumane, Sant'Ambrogio and Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo. The area around Negrar and Valpolicella has since time immemorial been known for marble quarrying and wine production.
"Valpolicella" is a term that originated in the 1100's when two small towns in the valley were fighting for independence. The name itself comes from the Latin, expressing "the valley with wine cellars". Today the economy of Valpolicella is based heavily on wine production, above all, Amarone and Recioto. The main grapes are Corvina, Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara.
