The exceptionally well-preserved city wall from 1379 with murals and splendid gothic gates provide the perfect setting for the winding streets, the buildings of red brick are in perfect harmony. It's a shame that the Germans destroyed the great southern gate - Port Roman in 1944. When you stroll around the town, it seems as if time has stood still. You will find banks, shops, bars and restaurants outside of the historic centre. Buonconvento is rare in the sense that it is in a valley and not on a hilltop. It is relatively unknown probably because of this reason. Had it been on a hilltop you would have to fight with hoards of tourists, but as it is, you can discover this gem in a peaceful manner.
