Camaiore is located along the old road that goes between Lucca and Viareggio, a few kilometers from the best beaches in Versilia. Namely, 'Via Francigena' this road was the famous pilgrim route during the middle ages, linking Rome with France.
The city is very old and is still adorned with medieval churches and castles. At St. Michaels Church in Piazza Dias you can see a fine example of Romanesque architecture. The church was built in 925 and destroyed during World War II but it was lovingly rebuild, brick by brick after the war.
Around the city there are many other villages, castles and palaces that were once necessary to protect agriculture from the raids.
