Cantagallo is a small community with around 3,000 inhabitants, located in the mountains north of Prato. The inhabitants are scattered throughout many small urban communities in the valleys of Bisenzio and Limentra where the landscape climbs from 300 to 1100 metres above sea level.
Cantagallo also has a small nature reserve - Riserva Naturale Acquerino Cantagallo - which is characterized by forests of beech, chestnut and oak trees. Until 1960 the local community largely lived off the revunue from chestnuts grown in the areas woods, and also from fruits and olive oil, which are produced on the lowest slopes. There is a tourist office in the centre where you can arrange to take a guided tour of the nature reserve.
