Chiusi is not recognised as one of Tuscany's best known cultural towns. In spite of the fact that its history goes back more than 2500 years and it gained city status during the Etruscan period (the town's Etruscan museum is among the best in the world) only relatively few foreigners have ever heard of it. The town has a charming centre, a striking medieval cathedral and intriguing catacombs. The position of Chiusis also makes it an ideal base for exploring the exciting part of southern Tuscany without having to stay in a typical tourist town. The popular towns of Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia and Monte Amiata are all within comfortable distance. Lake Trasimener and Umbria are not too far away either.
Distances: Montepulciano 22 km, Pienza 29 km, Perugia 53 km, Assisi 71 km and Rome 160 km.
