Follonica is a town in the province of Grosseto in the Italian region of Tuscany, on the Gulf of Follonica (Golfo di Follonica), about 40 km (25 mi) NW of the city of Grosseto. This town has a very high profile within Tuscany but is essentially unheard of outside Italy. Follonica is one of Tuscany’s (and Italy’s) favourite seaside towns. There is lots of entertainment, restaurants, shops and cafés, but there are surprisingly few tourists that venture ’so far down’ in Tuscany on their holidays. Perhaps though, they should consider it, because the beaches are wide and sandy and there is the added charm of visiting Italy and being surrounded by real Italians, instead of Scandinavians and Germans. The town has a medieval castle (Castello di Valli), whose ruins now overlook the modern town from a nearby hill, existed since at least 884.
