This "special" is not only an impression, you can have as a visitor who has fallen in love with Lucca, but also something objective: It is the only city in Italy in the magnitude (With about 90,000 inhabitants in Lucca) which still has completely preserved defence walls all the way around the older part of the city.

These walls, dating from the Renaissance, were obviously built as a defense mechanism against external enemies. Today the approximately 4 km bulwark is used however significantly more used in a placid way, as the locals and visitors go jogging, walking, cycling and in general enjoy outdoor life.

Lucca is a wealthy city, and the well-dressed residents reflects the city"s stylishness. You will enjoy going out and drinking an espresso here in the city where many of the cafes are old and full of atmosphere. The circular room in the middle of the city, Piazza dell"Anfiteatro, is home to a Roman amphitheater, and it is an experience by itself to stroll here.

Visit Casa di Puccini , where the world famous opera composer lived and from here you have a great panoramic view from the Guinigi Tower.

The city is not only known for it"s intact ramparts, historic sites and material wealth. Every summer they organise an opera in the open air and an annual music festival (also in summer) where major international singers and bands in many styles appear.
