This small medieval town is beautifully situated in the hills 40 km from the coast at 550 metres above sea level. (and in this context we are refering to the fine sandy beaches of Follonica and the Golfo di Baratti) The town has around 1500 inhabitants, shopping venues, bars and a few restaurants. At the same time it is always peaceful and has a relaxing atmosphere and seems free from tourism. The meandering narrow streets are charming and the few visitors that do stop by can see the castle ruins 'Rocca degli Alberti' from the 1100's. The area is characterized by large mineral and metal deposits as well as as sulphur springs that releases vapors at temperatures between 100 and 160 degrees. This is used wisely to create electricity and to heat the houses in the area.
