The town is small with only 2500 residents, but still offers three restaurants, a bakery, a deli, a bank, a gas station and a pharmacy. Piazza al Serchio means "the market by the river Serchio". The town has since medieval times been a meeting place for the residents of the surrounding similar valleys and mountains. Since the town has a train station, it is easy to get to, for example, Lucca and Cinque Terre from here.
